OnePlus has started distributing the stable version of ColorOS 17, built on Android 17, to the OnePlus 15 and OnePlus Pad 4 several days before its planned October 29 release date. The early rollout marks a visible milestone in the company's shift away from its long-standing OxygenOS software identity.
What's arriving and for whom
According to an announcement on OnePlus' Community forum, the OnePlus 15 (model CPH2745) is the first device receiving the stable update, with users who previously signed up for the open beta program apparently getting priority access. The OnePlus Pad 4 is also included in this initial wave, though OnePlus is staging the rollout, so not every eligible device will see it on the same day. Owners can check their update status by navigating to Settings > About device > ColorOS.
OnePlus has indicated that the OnePlus 15R, OnePlus 13, and OnePlus 13s are next in the queue, though no specific dates have been confirmed for those models yet.
What changes with ColorOS 17
Built on Android 17, the update introduces reworked system animations, a redesigned Quick Settings panel, expanded customization options, and refreshed privacy controls. OnePlus also says it has improved background process management, which the company states should help with battery efficiency for users who run multiple apps throughout the day. These are the kinds of incremental, system-level refinements typical of a major Android version bump, though actual battery gains will vary by usage pattern and are not independently verified here.
A bigger shift in OnePlus software strategy
This update fits into a larger transition: ColorOS is becoming the core software platform for OnePlus going forward, following the company's announcement that it will step back from maintaining separate OxygenOS branding in North American and European markets. While OxygenOS and ColorOS have long shared much of their underlying codebase, formally consolidating under the ColorOS name is a notable branding change for a company that built its early reputation partly on OxygenOS's distinct, close-to-stock feel.
OnePlus says the switch will be optional for eligible users, who can choose to move to ColorOS 17 and, if needed, roll back to OxygenOS afterward. The company has not yet specified which OxygenOS versions will be available for that rollback, leaving some uncertainty for users who want a safety net before committing to the new software.
Should you install it right away?
As with any major platform update, early adopters may encounter unforeseen bugs before widespread deployment irons out issues. Waiting for user reports over the first few days after release is a reasonable way to avoid problems, particularly given the scope of changes involved in this transition.
